NFL champions the Green Bay Packers opened the Super Bowl I ( The First World Championship AFL vs NFL) on January 16, 1967 by defeating the AFL champions Kansas City Chiefs 35-10. Green Bay became the first Super Bowl winners with the passing of Bart Starr, the receiving of Max McGee, and a key interception by all-pro safety Willie Wood.
Green Bay scored three second-half touchdowns, the first of which was set up by Wood's 50-yard return of an intercept.
Green Bay Packers McGee, filling in for ailing Boyd Dowler, after having caught only four passes all season, caught an unbelievable seven passes from Starr for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Elijah Pitts ran for two other scores.
The Kansas City Chiefs' 10 points came in the second quarter, with their only touchdown on a 7-yard pass from Len Dawson to Curtis McClinton. Bart Starr of the Green Bay Packers was chosen most valuable player for Super Bowl I, completing 16 of 23 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns. The Green Bay Packers were awarded $15,000 per player and the Kansas City Chiefs $7,500-the largest single-game shares in the history of team sports.
